Skellig Michael lighthouse is one of the main lights off the south west coast. Built to replace the original lighthouse higher up on the rock, as this was often obliterated by low cloud. The light was converted to fully automatic operation in 1987, meaning it no longer needed to be manned. This had previously been a job for tough individuals, as well as those who preferred a quiet, solitary life. In 2012 a new LED light was installed; 21st century ‘state of the art’ technology on this ancient Christian rock.
